Women's Golf wins NJCAA District Tournament

MELBOURNE, Florida - There was a point, around the turn to the back 9 of the second round of the NJCAA Southeast District Tournament that rival Daytona State had pulled even with the Women's Golf Team from Seminole State. In a howling 20 mile an hour wind, the Raiders shot a blistering -1 as team and the Falcons shot +8 for the back 9 giving Seminole its' first "District" Championship.

Minori Nagano was medalist for the tournament, shooting a -7 (137 for 2 rounds) and DSC's Briana Gabe placed second with a +2 (146). Ayami Takahashi (third, +6), Grace Aromando (T4, +8), Tiana Eldem (T7, +11) and "Pearl" Banthita Phoncharatkun (10th, +12) rounded out the Raiders' scoring.

Daytona State has automatically qualified for Nationals with their second place finish. Eastern Florida (third) will have to wait for the an at-large birth; these will be announced on April 27th at 11:00 am.

The NJCAA Women's Golf Championship runs May 9-12 at Mayfair Country Club. Admission is free.

 

RAIDER NOTES:
  • The Raiders won National Championships in 2021, 2019 and 2015
  • Seminole State Golf has finished in the top 3 in the Nation every year since 2009 and was #1 in the NJCAA at the time of cancellation of the 2019-20 season
  • The 2022 National Championships will be hosted by Seminole State College at Mayfair Country Club (May 9-12).
  • The four Sophomores from the 2021 team committed to playing at four-year programs (Alex Giles, Incarnate Word; Ranida Inpan, Converse University; Mary Ma, Wingate University, Alexandra Stephenson, Georgia Southern)  
  • The 2021-22 team returns two All-Americans from 2020-21 (Minori Nagano, Minami Kudo)
  • Coach Christa Teno was named LPGA Coach of the Year (2018) and inducted into the NJCAA Golf Hall of Fame (May 2017)

About the Seminole State Raiders:

The Raider Athletics Department of Seminole State College was established in 1965 and initially led by Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach Joe Sterling. Seminole State sponsors five sports all competing in the NJCAA Division I.  Both Baseball and Softball facilities are located on College Drive on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus.
