The Seminole State Raiders officially opened the 2026 cross country season on Friday at Cecil Field, competing in the Florida Intercollegiate XC Invite against a highly competitive field that featured programs from across the collegiate landscape.
Facing several NCAA Division I opponents, the Raiders used the season opener as an opportunity to measure their progress against some of the region's top competition. Both the men's and women's teams delivered encouraging performances that provide momentum as the season continues.
Men's Team Makes Early Statement
The Raiders men's team turned in an impressive performance, finishing as the third-highest NJCAA program in the field while placing 13th overall among 18 teams.
Leading the way was sophomore Aiden Williams, who crossed the finish line in 15:57. His performance ranks among the fastest in program history and established a new benchmark for the Raiders.
The depth of the men's squad was equally impressive. Four additional Raiders finished under the program's previous school-record mark of 17:00, demonstrating the team's growth and overall strength just one meet into the season.
The performance highlighted a team that is already showing confidence and depth, creating an exciting foundation for the remainder of the year. With championship season still ahead, the Raiders will continue building on Friday's success as training and competition intensify.
Women's Team Continues to Progress
The women's team also opened the season on a positive note, led by Dayanara Suarez Delgado, who posted a time of 21:25. Her finish ranks as the 10th-fastest performance in school history and provides another milestone for the growing program.
Beyond the individual results, one of the most encouraging signs was the progress displayed throughout the entire roster. Every Raider who competed recorded a personal-best time, reflecting the hard work and preparation put in during the offseason.
While the season opener served as an important early measuring stick, the Raiders know there is still room for growth. With continued training, racing experience, and development throughout the fall, the women's team will look to build on its strong start and continue moving forward.
Coach's Perspective
"The race was a good marker for where we currently are and what I need to adjust for each of their training plans," said Head Coach AJ. "It was a great start to the season, but we have plenty more growth and development ahead of us. If this race is any indication of how the season will go, we're in for a strong finish this year."
The Raiders return to action on September 18 when they compete at the FSU Pre-Regional XC Meet in Tallahassee.
