Raiders Dodge Weather for Fantastic Friday

SANFORD, Florida - Raider Softball, Women's Golf and Baseball teams all saw action on Friday after adjusting schedules in advance of large weather system that was to hit Florida on Saturday. All three had successful results.

The Women's Golf team hosted Detroit Mercy and Eastern Florida State College at Mayfair Golf Club. The teams rolled off beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Raiders carded an amazing 291 to beat EFSC (311) by 20 strokes and Detroit Mercy (315) by 24. The Raiders will travel on Sunday to Dade City for the Western Kentucky/Florida Gulf Coast hosted Spring Break Shootout. The Raiders will face rival Daytona State and 13 other (NCAA Division I) teams.

Seminole State Baseball moved their game up to at 11 a.m. on Friday. The opponent was the defending Mid Florida Conference champions, Santa Fe Saints in the start of a key three-game series. Michael Guerrero got the start and threw six strong innings in a seesaw battle. Brendan Parks (3-1) got the win and Carson Crossley picked up his first save of the season. Luke Hatcher kept his hot bat going 3-3, scoring two runs and knocking in two RBI. But the play of the day was the one that ended it. With SSC holding a 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth, the Saints had the bases loaded with two outs. A single to left looked to tie the game, but a charging Marcos Sevillano fielded a clean ball and threw what only could be described as a laser to the plate for the third out.

The Raiders play Santa Fe in Gainesville on Sunday (moved from Saturday) at 3 p.m. The series finally is scheduled to be at 3 p.m. at the Jack in Sanford on Monday.

Softball was the lone team to feel the wrath of the weather, a 45-minute lightening delay during game two did not stop the Raiders from sweeping Polk, 1-0 and 9-5. Jada Oleski threw a 2-hit shutout in game 1 and SSC plated the winning run in the first. Game two had a little more drama, as Polk jumped out to an early lead and would not go away. Shelby Williams lead the offense going 3-4 and knocking in three runs and scoring twice. Taylor Thomas picked up the win.

The Raiders host Northern Iowa on Tuesday before opening conference play at home on Thursday vs. Daytona State College.
